The Company's Website
A company with just a few products actually uses very
little of the resources, memory and traffic, allotted by the Host. For example,
www.bhosterberg.com uses just 25 MB of memory (about 1.25% of the 2023 MB
limit), and is limited to 40,000 MB of traffic per month.
When you establish an account with ICDSoft (and probably a
lot of other Hosts) you can have up to 30 subdomains free, each have a
username/password. A technical person, 'fluent' with PCs (i.e. Jess) with
some guidelines, could be the company "webmaster". Ok, what are the limitations?
A company might set aside half of its memory for subdomains
(employees). With 10 employees eligible for the perk, that's about 100 MB of
memory and 4,000 MB of traffic for each employee, each about 5% of the website's
resources.
Memory Usage
Employees would probably use their website space for pictures
(the kids, their vacation, et cetera). My 3-mega pixel digital camera generates
a 2816 x 2112 picture that becomes a JPEG file of 1.27 MB, however, when the
picture is reduced to web size (800 x 600 pixels), the filesize is only about
1/3 MB.
The 100MB for each employee could hold around 300 viewable JPEGs.
Server Usage (Traffic)
A user 'enters' a site by downloading an HTML and other
files. The HTML file is usually less than 10 KB in size. An employee with, say,
two dozen pictures to show would use about 8 MB (24 x 1/3 KB) of traffic with
each visitor.
The 2,000 MB traffic for provides each employee's pictures
be viewed 250 times.
